Today, we (myself and my colleagues in the Department of Physics and Faculty of Science, FULafia) reviewed and examined the PhD proposals of three candidates from the Department of Physics in FULafia. The candidates aimed to do carry out the listed research:1. Active shielding of high energy galactic particles using superconducting magnets for deep space exploration (James).2. Purification of polluted mining waste water using zinc-Zirconium oxides nano particles (Solomon).3. Multilayered passive shielding system in space craft design (Emmanuel).The candidates working on topics number 1 and 3 are my PhD Students.

Our new scientific article is now published by Optical Materials- a Q1 Journal in Glass & Materials Science. The novelty in this @TETFundNg funded research is that x-ray attenuating glass are for the first time synthesised & characterised using mineral ores from Kano and Plateau States of Nigeria and rice husk sourced silica. In the opening lines of the abstract, we noted that the choice of the minerals bearing ores and rice husk silica over analytical grade chemical oxides in large scale production of x-ray shielding glasses was to promote waste valorisation and circular economy. I am extremely excited to share part of our TETFund Nigeria Funded Research project which was recently published by Biomass Conservation and Biorefinery - a Q1 Journal published by Springer Nature . In this work which is the leading objective of our funded project, we synthesised (via calcination) silica from Biomass namely, ricehu husk and palm fruit bunch and characterised the synthesised silica using XRD, TGA, DTGA, XRF, SEM in order to recommend areas of industrial applications. https://lnkd.in/dqjyXfHY

Earlier today, we had seminar presentations from two distinguished young scholars in the Department of Physics, Federal University of Lafia. 1. Dr. Muhammad Sani presented his research work titled Tittle:Investigation of zinc oxide quantum dots based thin films on flexible substrate for perovskite solar cells.Dr. Sani’s work aims to produce 4th Generation flexible perovskite solar cell using using ZnO Quantum dots. 2. Dr. Joseph Omojola presented a seminar titled Multiwavelength Astrophysics in the light of BL Lacertae events of October 6, 2020. The work of Dr. Joseph is still in progress as it tries to provide answers to why extragalactic particles with energy TeV were detected by various astronomical instruments in the first week of October 2020.The Department of Physics in Federal University of Lafia has 4 main areas of research focus namely:1. Theoretical Group (Quantum Information and Plasma Physics)2. Astrophysics, Atmospheric and Geophysics 3. Nuclear, Radiation and Medical Physics 4. On 28th November 2023, I was at the International Conference Centre Abuja along with hundreds of Nigerian Engineers to attend the conferment ceremony of Honorary Fellowship of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) to our friend and brother Alhaji (Dr) Usman Yahaya Kansila (FNSE, FNIM) who’s the Chairman of UYK Group of Companies a conglomerate that has employed over 500 Nigerian professionals. The fellowship conferment ceremony was part of the major events of the year 2023 International Engineering Conference, Exhibition and Annual General Meeting of the NSE.(Dr) U.Y. Kansila also made positive impacts through cooperate social responsibility by initiating the Yahaya Kansila Foundation which provides community services, momentary grants to NGOs and sponsorships of conferences & seminars on good governance and accountability. (Dr) U.Y. Kansila is a well decorated businessman who had received recognition awards and fellowships by NIM, ICAN, APWEN etc.You are worthy of both emulation and celebration Sir, (Dr) U.Y. Kansila.
