Inflammation is a defense mechanism of a host during an injury or infection it is healthy immune process that causes disease or irritation. NSAIDs were used for the treatment of inflammation. The main aim of this research is to evaluate the inflammatory activity of Anogeissus leiocarpa stem bark extracts. Three different solvents were used for the extraction (aqueous, methanol, hexane). The total exhaustive method of extraction was used to extract the three solvents. The three extract were subjected to quantitative phytochemical analysis of (phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins and tannins) which were found to be present at varying concentration in each extract. Inhibition of protein denaturation and RBCmembranestabilization capabilities of the plants extract was carried out using different concentration of each extract in g/mL ( 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000g/mL). The IC50 of each extract was calculated. The methanol extract of A.leiocarpa stem bark was found to possess the highest activity against inf lammation by having the lowest IC50 in each case. The possible mechanism of action of the extract could be due to the presence of flavonoids and alkaloids which were reported to have anti-inflammatory activity. Keywords: Inflammation, Anogeissus leiocarpa, phytochemical analysis

COMPARATIVE ECOLOGICAL VARIATION AND IT’S EFFECT ON ABUNDANCE OF MOSQUITO POPULATION IN KURA AND DALA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KANO STATE NIGERIA

Anecological study of mosquitoes was undertaken in rural (Kura) and urban(Dala) communities of KanoState, Nigeria. The purpose of this study was to compare the type and abundance of mosquito species using dipping technique, furthermore todeterminethephysico-chemical parameters of the water sample of the larval habitat. Eight weeks survey was carried out towards the beginning of raining season from30th of Juneto19th ofAugust 2016. A total of 50 dips of larval collection were carried out weekly in both study sites. The larvae were reared to adult stage. Sex differentiation and specie identification were determined using simple morphological keys and the physico-chemical parameterswererecordedthroughout this period. A total of 31,787 different mosquitoes larval instars were collected from both Kura and Dala local government areas of Kano state. Results of this study revealed a total of 4,311 Anopheles larvae ( 62.1%) and 2,628 Culex larvae (37.9%) collected in Kura local government, whereas in Dala local government a total of 24,848 larvae were collected with 23,155 Culex larvae (93.2%) and Anopheles larvae (6.8%). In Dala local government, temperature ranged from 28OC to 35OC and pH value 7.0 to 8.0 was obtained throughout the eight weeks survey period. Whereas in Kura temperature ranged between 23OC and 34OC with pH values 5.9 to 7.5. One hundred anopheles mosquitoes where sampled randomly from both the two sites and identified up to specie level. Keywords: Mosquito, Anopheles, Culex, Mosquito larvae

Effect of water stress on the growth performance of some maize varieties

2019 •

Amina H A M I S U Dankaka

Water shortage on our globe has very deleterious effects on food security. Judicious use of water for crops seems very wise in the current scenario of water scarcity. The research was carried out at the screen house of Bayero University Kano State during the period of 4th August to 4th October 2016. Seven maize varieties (TZEI 124X TZEI25, EVDT-Y2000STR,99EVDT,99TZEE-YSTR QPACO,2011TZE-WDTSTRSYN,2009TZEE-WDT STR, DT-STR-Y-SYN 2) were studied under irrigation condition and their response to water stress conditions wasrevealedbasedongrowthandrootparameters(plant height, number of leaves, leaf area per plant, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight and root dry weight). The experiment was laid down in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications and three treatment regimes which include control as T1, mild water stress (watering at two days interval as T2) and severe water stress (watering at three days interval as T3). The results showed growth parameters grown under severe stress conditions are significantly different compared to the control and varieties grown undermildwaterstressconditions with outstanding performance recorded in favor of EVDT-Y2000-STR, while variety 99 EVDT was assessed as the least in performance. Keywords: varieties, maize, water stress, severe water stress, mild water stress.

ISLAMIC APPRAISAL OF ZAUREN ṢULḤ (RECONCILIATION FORUM) AS CONFLICT RESOLUTION MECHANISM IN BAUCHI STATE (2003 TO 2018)

ISLAMIC APPRAISAL OF ZAUREN ṢULḤ (RECONCILIATION FORUM) AS CONFLICT RESOLUTION MECHANISM IN BAUCHI STATE (2003 TO 2018

MUHAMMAD AUWAL SULAIMAN (Ph.D)

As long as people live together, they might have their individual or collective interests, opinions, thoughts, tastes and beliefs to defend or guard, and in the course of protecting any, it may lead to a dispute. The effort of Sharī’ah Commission Bauchi State to adopt a device mechanism for resolving conflict amicably through the use of Islamic sources yielded great impact on the one side, and it faced some challenges on the other hand. This research investigated Zauren Ṣulḥ as a conflict resolution mechanism in Bauchi State. It employed the method of interview based on open-ended questions. The findings of the research show that, there are a lot of irregularities and discrepancies that affected the conduct of the programme. Thus, the research concludes that, despite the activities and tremendous achievements on cases of reconciliation in all the branches of Zauren Sulh, the state is not different from other Shari’ah states in term of crises here and there, like abduction, youth thugs, and rampant cases of divorce. The Annual Progress Reports of Sharī’ah Commission Bauchi State shows that the cases are increasing and the reasons responsible for this include the large crowd of emigrants of neighboring states like Plateau, Borno and Yobe who ran from their areas for safety of their lives, due to the ethnic and religious crises in their states. Moreover, on daily bases people who choose to take their complaints to Zauren Sulh rather than courts are increasing. Finally the study recommends measures to address the challenges faced by the Institution. Among the measures are: the Sharī’ah Commission Bauchi State should reform the framework of the programme to ensure its smooth conduct.
