I recall these from my childhood: our Mom made them and although she did make squares, she also rolled them into balls for us, about the size of an apple..loved that they were covered with the chocolate on the outside rather than cut. 🙂 It’s time to make these for our Grandson without the Nutella as he has a nut allergy! Thank you for the recipe and the memories!

Hi there! I used ur step by step Puffed Wheat recipe twice and they’ve turned both times! Thank you! The only minor problem I had, was the wax paper stuck to the squares. Am I the only one who found that problem? LOL I just warmed them a bit and peeled the paper away! Success! And the squares were gone in 1 day.😁👍

Hi Marva, Thanks for taking the time to write. I’m glad you had success with the recipe. That makes me happy! It’s the whole reason why I try to make my instructions clear and understandable. I haven’t ever had my wax paper stick, but maybe your area has more humidity?. Next time, try giving your wax paper a quick spray with Pam or some similar cooking oil spray. That should keep it from sticking. Hope this helps.

Have you ever substituted honey for corn syrup? I have no CS but loads of honey. Just wondering if it’s worth the precious liquid gold. 🙂

No Amy, I haven’t ever used honey, so I can’t tell you if that would work or not. It seems like it should, but I can’t say for sure, and you are right, honey is quite expensive. If you do try it, please let me know how it turns out. Good luck!

I just made a batch of these and so far so good. I had to try a small bite and Yummy! Just waiting a little more before cutting the entire pan.

I was so excited because this was my second time EVER making these delicious squares. My first batch turned out way to hard (different recipe)

I followed these directions to a (T). I think this is my keeper! Thanks so much for the step by step, it really helped.

I might try using a little less sugar next time. 🙂

Nana, I have my doubts that you have actually made these before, because you use the wrong bowl size, wrong spoon size, hmm? Also reading the last comment on my page, you mention that these fall apart while eating them. Sheesh, whoo does a person believe?

Well Benita, the pictures clearly show that I have, in fact, made these. I didn’t have to tell my readers about the troubles I had, but the mistakes I made show that I’m just human, and we all make mistakes. I could have left that part out, but why? I don’t want to pretend that I am perfect. And yes, these do tend to fall apart a little while you are eating them. Whether you purchase one of these square at a bakery counter, or make them your self, they still fall apart a little. It’s just a characteristic of this type of square. I hope this clarifies things for you. I’m sorry that you found this post so offensive. I promise that I am nothing if not totally open and honest in all of my published materials.

One of my faves as well!! My Mom’s (Wartime cake )😉 Recipe called for “toasted” puffed wheat! I always put in in the oven, not really ho, while the syrup is cooking!!!! The puffed wheat seems to stay crispier!

Do you have any suggestion what to do if I boiled my syrup too long & they are hard?

Sorry Barbara. There isn’t anything you can do to change it once you have boiled the syrup too long. Are they still edible? I’ll bet they still taste good. Next time, watch the pot carefully and set the timer as soon as it starts to boil.

I read that you can add a cup of mini marshmallows after your done boiling it, I haven’t tried it yet, but apparently it’ll hold them together if you didn’t boil it long enough, and keep them soft if you boiled them too long. Good luck, hope this helps.

That’s a great idea! Kind of like Rice Crispy Marshmallow squares. I will have to try that, because this produces a tasty square, but it does tend to fall apart as you eat it.
