also owned a cotton gin, a syrup mill and a woodyard in Cayce. When he was 40, he and his family moved from their log house to a house that Bookman built. The house, now 101 years old, still stands on Kennerly Road about a mile east of St. Paul's church. Bookman raised a family of 12.

a John Richardson came to Irmo in the 1870s from the East or West Indies and married a partCherokee Indian. He was a farmer and a builder. One of Richardson's eight children, James E. Richardson, owned more than 500 acres in Richland and Lexington counties. James Richardson built a 16-room Colonial home for his family of 13 children, who all received formal educations.

Moses Geiger, an Indian, was born in North Carolina. He ran away to South Carolina about 1815 rather than be forced to live on a reservation. Geiger married a slave named Nancy Washington and raised a family of 11 children in the Irmo area. Dr. Davis said the marker dedicated Saturday is just the beginning.

She plans to continue gathering information and artifacts, not only from the northwest portion of the county, but from all over Richland and Lexington counties. She hopes to write a book about her finds. "We plan to uncover artifacts that can be housed in libraries and archives, both inside and outside the state. We plan to document, write and publish an authentic history of blacks who have been left out of the books about people in our beloved state of South Carolina," she said. Dr.

And she had to collect $850 from the church and the families for the 10-foot-high marker of aluminum-encased concrete. The marker is laid with a plaque that bears a raised relief of the South Carolina flag and brief histories of the church and the families.

Histories of their beginnings, as compiled by Dr. Davis, follow: Miles Bowman was born in Irmo in 1823. He became a successful farmer with large tracts of land in Richland and Lexington counties. He was seen as a leader among other farmers, encouraging them to sell produce to educate their children. He led in the building of the Oak Grove AME Church in 1890, which 40 years later was moved and renamed the St.

Paul AME Church. Many of his descendants became church leaders. Henry Corley was born in Irmo in 1851. He owned 400 acres in Richland and Lexington counties, a syrup mill and a blacksmith shop. He was a carpenter and served on the Allen University Board of Trustees.

He was the only black member of the Dutch Fork Farmers' Beef Club, a group of independent farmers. Corley donated his land for the building of the Pleasant Spring AME Church that now stands on Coldstream Drive off Bush River Road. Octavius Bookman, born in Johnston in 1844, moved to the Oak Grove area and became a farmer. He ABBEVILLE Myer Poliakoff, 73, died Saturday. Born in Abbeville, he was a son of the late David and Rachel Axelrod Poliakoff.

He was a longtime trustee of the Abbeville County Library and was a trustee from 1940 to 1957 with the Abbeville City School System. He was the owner of D. Poliakoff Store. He was a member of the B'nai Israel Synagogue in Anderson. Surviving are his widow, Mrs.
